Holiday regulars: Christmas cards
Personalized Christmas and holiday cards are a dying art, no thanks to the ease and speed of e-mail, chat, and SMS. Indeed, why wait a few days for a card to get to a friend, a relative, or a client if you can send it out in a jiffy, with just a few clicks?
But there’s something different about a Christmas card. It says many things about the sender. It is old-fashioned, yes, but it also means sweet and warm and personal. It’s moving, it’s poignant. It tells you, “I took some time to write this down for you when I can just e-mail it,” and “I hope you don’t mind the scrawl–after all, it’s the thought that counts.” It shows that you mean so much to the recipient.
The first Christmas card was designed in 1843 by a narrative painter, John Callcot Horsley, who created it for Sir Henry Cole, the director of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Printed in lithography and handcolored, 1,000 copies of the card were sold in London. [Read more about the first Christmas card here.]
